They consisted of two lenses riveted together, had no sides, and typically needed to be held in place by the wearer\u2019s hand. In the intervening centuries, the technology behind \u2014 and the design of \u2014 spectacles has evolved, but their use has remained constant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xts-rich-text__body-m\">It\u2019s no surprise, then, that they appear in pictures across art history: from El Greco\u2019s portrait of the bespectacled\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/art\/collection\/search\/436573\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cardinal Fernando Ni\u00f1o de Guevara<\/a>, via Jean-Sim\u00e9on Chardin\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.artic.edu\/artworks\/102131\/self-portrait-with-a-visor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">depictions of himself in old age<\/a>, to Grant Wood\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.artic.edu\/artworks\/6565\/american-gothic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>American Gothic<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(the male figure in which carries a pitchfork and wears round glasses).<\/p>\n<p class=\"xts-rich-text__body-m\">No consideration of this topic is complete, though, without mention of a thrilling set of paintings by Francis Bacon. Marking a pivotal moment in the artist\u2019s career, the series comprises four works \u2014 each depicting a man in glasses.
