The American College of Greece Office of Advancement – Alumni & Office of Sustainability – Public Affairs presents “Navigating Climate Policy”!
An interactive panel discussion on climate policy, where experts from diverse fields will explore the challenges and opportunities within the current policy landscape. This event will provide insights into how European climate policies shape sectors as varied as transportation, energy, and international trade, impacting both regional and global climate action efforts.
With perspectives drawn from a range of professional backgrounds, our distinguished panelists will offer a comprehensive view of the practical and strategic dimensions of climate policy.
The discussion will touch on themes from George Dikaios’, Pierce ’10 alumnus, recent publication, EU Climate Diplomacy towards the IMO and ICAO (Palgrave Macmillan, 2024), and will extend beyond to address broader implications for European policy and the unique role of the EU in driving international climate negotiations.
Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how policies are crafted, implemented, and negotiated, both within Europe and on the international stage, and the complex interplay between policymaking and various industries. This is an ideal opportunity for those interested in the future of climate action and the evolving role of European diplomacy in addressing global challenges.

Speakers
Stella Apostolaki
Stella Apostolaki is Assistant Professor of Environmental Science at Deree and Executive Director of the ACG Centre of Excellence in Sustainability. She holds a BSc/(Hons) in Environmental Science, an MSc in Urban Water and Environmental Management and a PhD on sustainable urban drainage systems and river management options, obtained from the University of Abertay, Dundee, UK. She has a wide research experience, she is expert evaluator for EU-funded projects, has worked as a researcher in collaboration with Universities and Authorities in Greece and in the UK, and has participated in numerous EU-funded projects. She collaborates as external consultant with several entities, such as the Green Fund of the Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy. She has been collaborating with the ATHENA Research Centre, the UNSDSN Greece & Climate KIC Greece, and private entities. Her research interests are on integrated water management and innovation, sustainable development, sustainable stormwater management, climate change, conservation of biodiversity, ecosystem restoration, public awareness/stakeholder engagement methods and public education, green urban planning and SDGs implementation.
Spyros Blavoukos
Spyros Blavoukos is Professor and Chair of the Department of International and European Economic Studies, Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB). He is an AUEB graduate with further studies at Master and Doctoral level at the Department of Government, University of Essex. His Ph.D. Thesis analysed the Greek role in the negotiations of the EU enlargement with the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. He is also Senior Research Fellow and Head of the EU Institutions and Policies Programme at the Hellenic Foundation for European and Policy Research (ELIAMEP) and Head of the ‘Ariane Condellis’ European Programme. He has participated in many international research projects and has (co-) authored and (co-)edited eight books and more than twenty articles in international, peer-reviewed, academic journals. His main research interests focus on the analysis of international multilateral negotiations and his latest publications examine the international role and representation of the EU in other International Organizations, especially the United Nations.
Emmanuella Doussis
Emmanuella Doussis is Professor of international institutions at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Uoa), UNESCO Chairholder on Climate Diplomacy and head of the climate and sustainability programme at the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP). She lectures on international law and international organizations, environmental policies, climate policies & diplomacy. Her most recent book explores the role of international law and diplomacy in addressing climate change. She has been a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, USA (2022). She has served as advisor to the rapporteur of the European Economic and Social Committee for the preparation of the opinion on EU Climate Diplomacy (2023). She is the director of the master’s programme on Southeast European Studies: politics, history and economics (UoA) and she coordinates the EU funded programme Jean Monnet Module on Climate Policies and Diplomacy in Southeast Europe (2024-2026). For her work, she was awarded the 2021 Natural Resources International Legal Specialist Award from the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law.
Angeliki Kosmopoulou
Angeliki Kosmopoulou, Pierce ’84, is a seasoned story strategist and philanthropy advisor with a diverse academic background and extensive expertise in non-profit leadership, cultural management, communications and storytelling. She holds a BSc in History and Archaeology from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, an MA and PhD in Classical Archaeology from Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, USA, and an MBA from the University of Leicester, UK. Additionally, she has earned a Certificate in Public Narrative: Leadership, Storytelling, and Action from Harvard University’s Kennedy School. She is the founder of Storymentor, and she has been the Executive Director of the Athanasios C. Laskaridis Charitable Foundation (2015-2024). Her publications include a monograph on classical sculpture and iconography, a book on storytelling, and several articles on archaeology and marine conservation. She is a frequent contributor to Greek media and a podcaster, while she serves as a mentor for women in entrepreneurship and public life. Angeliki holds leadership positions as Board or Advisory Member in a series of organizations.
Theodoros Syriopoulos
Theodoros Syriopoulos is Professor of Shipping Finance and Chair of the Department of Ports Management and Shipping, School of Economics and Political Sciences, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. He also holds adjunct visiting posts in international and domestic Schools, including, Audencia Business School, France; Newcastle University, UK; Shanghai Maritime University, China; Law School of Athens; and Athens University of Economics and Business. He has also served as a Professor of Finance, in the Shipping, Trade and Transport Dpt., School of Business Studies, University of the Aegean. Before joining academia, he served in top executive management posts in banking, investment, asset management, corporate finance, and consulting business. He publishes regularly in accredited international financial and maritime journals, edited volumes and books in topics of financial management, capital markets and shipping. A part of his applied research has gained international prizes and distinctions. He holds a Ph.D. and an M.A. in Applied Economics from Kent University at Canterbury, UK, and a B.A. in Economics from the University of Piraeus, Greece.

George Dikaios, Pierce ‘10, is a lecturer and a postdoctoral researcher at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (UoA), affiliated with the Department of Ports Management & Shipping and the Department of Political Science & Public Administration. He is also a Senior Research Fellow of the UNESCO Chair on Climate Diplomacy and a Research Fellow of the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP). He holds a BSc in political science and public administration and a MSc in international and European studies from UoA, and an MSc in political science from Leiden University, The Netherlands. His PhD explores policy- and decision-making at national, European and international level regarding international transport emissions; it is published as a book titled EU Climate Diplomacy towards the IMO and ICAO by Palgrave Macmillan/Springer. He actively participates in the Greek ACG Alumni Chapter’s organization committee and hosts the ACG Alumni Podcasts From Classroom to Career.
