Standing proudly on the waterfront of Dapia Harbour, the Poseidonion Grand Hotel has been the unmistakable symbol of Spetses for more than a century. With its majestic Belle Époque architecture, rich history and enduring elegance, it has welcomed royalty, distinguished scholars, celebrated artists and discerning travellers from around the world.

Spetses is one of the Saronic Islands, celebrated for its sophisticated atmosphere, elegant mansions and lush pine forests that reach almost to the sea. The island’s name is believed to originate from the Venetian phrase Isola di Spezie, meaning “Island of Fragrances,” inspired by the aromatic herbs and pine trees that blanket its landscape.
Beyond its natural beauty, Spetses occupies an important place in Greek history. During the Greek War of Independence in 1821, the island became a powerful naval stronghold, with its fleet playing a crucial role in the fight for freedom. Its most famous daughter, the fearless naval commander Laskarina Bouboulina, remains one of Greece’s greatest national heroines, and my personal favourite.
Today, the island has preserved much of its old-world charm. Cars are limited, horse-drawn carriages still pass through the harbour, and I have to admit that we did not hesitate to hop into one and experience a bygone era firsthand. Life moves at a pace that encourages visitors to slow down and appreciate every moment.
The story of the Poseidonion Grand Hotel begins with Sotirios Anargyros, a wealthy businessman born in Spetses who dreamed of transforming his island into an international destination. Inspired by the magnificent seaside hotels he admired throughout Europe, he commissioned the construction of what would become Greece’s most prestigious island hotel. When the doors first opened in 1914, the Poseidonion represented a new standard of hospitality. Combining impressive architecture with exceptional service, it quickly established itself as the preferred address for Europe’s elite.
Over the decades, the hotel has witnessed world events, welcomed generations of remarkable guests and evolved with the times while never losing the elegance that first made it famous. A painstaking restoration in the early twenty-first century carefully preserved its historic character, allowing modern comforts to blend harmoniously with its timeless beauty.
From the moment you arrive, the Poseidonion possesses an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Greece. The sweeping façade, polished marble interiors and panoramic terraces overlooking the harbour create an effortless sense of refinement.
There is no need for extravagance here. Luxury is expressed through impeccable service, graceful architecture and the quiet confidence of a hotel that has welcomed some of the world’s most accomplished individuals for generations.
Throughout its history, the Poseidonion has attracted members of royal families, diplomats, business leaders, writers, scientists, Nobel Prize winners, cultural figures and NBA basketball players who appreciated both its discretion and its exceptional setting. The Poseidonion has never sought publicity; instead, its reputation has grown naturally through generations of distinguished guests who continue to return.
One of the highlights of my stay was the privilege of spending several nights in the Tower Room, one of the hotel’s most remarkable accommodations within the Historic Wing. From the moment I entered, it was evident that this was no ordinary hotel room. Original architectural features, elegant furnishings and spectacular views across Dapia Harbour create an atmosphere where history and contemporary comfort coexist beautifully. The Greek flag, beautifully positioned on our balcony, danced gently in the afternoon breeze. The aroma throughout the room was mesmerising, while the Frédéric Malle amenities provided the perfect way to unwind after a day spent beneath the summer sun. Every single detail reflects the building’s remarkable heritage while offering every modern luxury expected from a world-class hotel.
What makes the Tower Room especially fascinating is the extraordinary list of guests who have stayed within its walls. His Majesty King Constantine II of Greece was among its distinguished occupants, alongside Nobel Prize winners, eminent academics and other internationally respected figures. What an honour!
Knowing that such influential individuals once admired the same sea views and experienced the same peaceful surroundings adds a unique sense of connection to the room. It feels less like checking into a hotel and more like becoming part of a continuing story that has unfolded over more than a century.
Breakfast at the Poseidonion is an experience in itself. Served in the magnificent Main Hall, guests begin their day surrounded by grand architecture, curated works of art, including the current exhibition from Skoufa Gallery in Athens, an elegant grand piano and the hotel’s intimate library, where shelves filled with books invite moments of quiet reflection. The generous breakfast showcases the finest organic and locally sourced ingredients, from freshly baked breads and handmade pastries to seasonal fruit, traditional Greek delicacies, honey served straight from the honeycomb and artisanal cheeses. Every detail reflects the hotel’s philosophy of celebrating authentic flavours while honouring the rich culinary heritage of Greece, making each morning feel both indulgent and effortlessly sophisticated.
One of the most memorable experiences during my stay was the Bostani Experience, a beautiful celebration of nature, gastronomy and authentic Greek hospitality. Our journey began aboard a charming vintage jeep, which climbed the island’s rugged hills along winding rocky tracks before arriving at the hotel’s organic farm. Surrounded by flourishing vegetable gardens, fruit trees and free-range hens, we discovered where many of the fresh ingredients served at the Poseidonion begin their journey. Beneath the shade of a centuries-old olive tree, we shared an unforgettable farm-to-table lunch prepared with ingredients harvested just moments before. As often happens when good food brings people together, conversation flowed effortlessly among the guests. By pure chance, we found ourselves dining alongside fascinating entrepreneurs who had played a key role in developing one of the world’s best-known cryptocurrencies, a reminder that the most unexpected encounters often become some of the most cherished travel memories.
Long after leaving Spetses, what remains is not simply the memory of a beautiful hotel, but the feeling of having briefly stepped into a world where tradition, refinement and history continue to shape every experience.
