The artist Panagiotis Tountas and the Greek Landscape

By Zeta Tzioti

Panagiotis Tountas is one of the most influential contemporary Greek painters, renowned for his ability to combine classical themes with modern artistic expressions.

From a young age, Tountas was drawn to painting, often creating portraits and scenes from Greek mythology. It wasn’t until the 2nd year of high school that he realized that painting would be his path. His relationship with his mentor, Panagiotis Tetsis, played a crucial role in shaping his artistic journey. Tetsis’ teaching extended beyond the confines of the art school, spilling over into cafes, tavernas, and bars—always filled with inspiration and creative challenges.

Nature holds a significant role in Tountas’ work, as he believes that the light and shapes created in nature are unique. However, it is his personal aesthetic and spontaneity that truly guide his art. He works on multiple pieces simultaneously, which allows him to create a unified vision across his body of work.

Hydra, with its rich artistic tradition and striking landscape, has deeply influenced Tountas. In recent years, he has also delved into sculpture, working on large-scale pieces. Sculpture, particularly the use of large dimensions and materials like papier-mâché, has impacted his painting, adding new dimensions of volume, perspective, and plasticity to his work.

Tountas draws inspiration from many artists, particularly from German Expressionists and the Leipzig School. Nevertheless, his work remains authentic and personal, evolving over the years towards more modern and expressive paths. He continues to blend traditional Greek themes with a dynamic, contemporary artistic style.

Although he frequently travels abroad and visits exhibitions, he believes that representational painting in Greece remains more vibrant and authentic compared to the theoretical approach often found in art schools abroad.

The allure of the superficial, the sense of spontaneity, and the constant search for harmony and intensity are what fascinate him in painting. At present, Tountas is focused on a new series of works centered on Arcadian landscapes, as well as pieces with a socio-political character, influenced by German Expressionism.

Panagiotis Tountas continues to let his work speak for itself, creating with truth and spontaneity, and offering a distinctive perspective on both the Greek landscape and contemporary art.
